Course Overview
Welcome to the Assistance Dog Training Specialisation course
This program is designed for individuals who have already completed the ACM40322 Certificate IV in Animal Behaviour and Training and are eager to expand their expertise in training assistance dogs. Throughout this comprehensive course, students will embark on a journey to learn how to train assistance dogs for a wide range of uses and functions, making a meaningful impact on the lives of both dogs and their handlers.
The course is structured to provide a holistic learning experience. It begins with an engaging online component, where students will delve into the theoretical aspects of assistance dog training. This includes gaining an in-depth understanding of the relevant legislation, ethics, and techniques required in this specialised field. You’ll also explore the various roles assistance dogs can play in helping individuals with disabilities and the specific training protocols associated with each role.
Following the online portion, students will embark on a transformative two-week practical training experience at our Dog Training Facility. Here, you will have the opportunity to put your newfound knowledge into action. You’ll learn how to assess, select, and train dogs to become reliable and compassionate assistance dogs. Practical hands-on training will be emphasised, enabling you to develop the essential skills necessary to become a proficient assistance dog trainer.
By the end of this course, you will not only possess the expertise to train assistance dogs effectively but also understand the unique needs of handlers and how to facilitate the successful pairing of assistance dogs with their human companions. This program equips you with the knowledge and hands-on experience to make a positive impact in the world of assistance dog training, fostering independence and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
Course Enrolment Process
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Completed ACM40322 Certificate IV Animal Behaviour & Training
- At least 18 years old
- Completed Year 10 or Equivalent
- Access to a computer, laptop or tablet
- Internet access and email address
- Proficiency in speaking and writing in English
- Physically capable of restraining animals, handling animal feed and standing for extended periods of time.
COURSE DELIVERY
This course is taught using a blended approach which includes online lessons and practical training at the Dog Training facility.
Students have up to 12 months to complete the course. However, many students are able to complete their study within this time frame based upon the amount of hours dedicated to study each week.

Online
The course is delivered online which means students are not required to attend classes or lectures. Students will receive access to our ‘Learning Portal’ where they will find the course materials, interactive learning materials, videos and assessments. In addition, students will also receive a hard copy of the Learner Resource.
While studying online, students will have access to our teaching support team via email, online chat or phone. Our teaching team will help support and guide students every step on their journey.

PRACTICAL TRAINING - DOG TRAINING ACADEMY
The practical training (hands-on) is completed at the Dog Training Facility under the guidance and support of our
teachers and dog trainers for 2-weeks full time. This ensures the student is taught the hands-on skills required to become a qualified dog trainers while being guided by our team.
During the practical training component of the Assistance Dog Training Specialisation course, you will have the opportunity to hone your skills and develop a deep understanding of the nuances involved in training assistance dogs. Hands-on experience will be at the forefront as you work with real dogs and handlers, allowing you to master techniques such as obedience training, task-specific training, and behavior modification. You’ll learn to assess the unique needs and abilities of individual dogs, tailoring your training approach to suit their personalities and strengths. Additionally, you will gain expertise inworking with handlers, teaching them effective communication and bonding techniques to establish a strong partnership with their assistance dogs. Furthermore, you’ll delve into advanced training methods for tasks like mobility assistance, medical alert, and emotional support, ensuring that both dogs and handlers are well-prepared for their respective roles.

While completing the ACM40122 Certificate IV in Animal Behaviour & Training – Assistance Dog Trainer qualification from the Dog Trainer Academy, you will study the following subjects:

ACMADT401 Assess prospective handler’s suitability for an assistance dog
ACMADT402 Instruct handlers with disability to train assistance dogs
ACMADT403 Train dogs using operant and classical conditioning techniques
ACMADT501 Plan and conduct assistance dog training in specific and complex tasks
